1. The reason why Jaipur is called Pink City
Maharaja Sawai Singh painted the city of Jaipur pink in 1876 to welcome Prince Edward of Wales and Queen Victoria on their India tour.
Pink is considered to be the color of hospitality and represents the hospitality spirit of the people of Rajasthan.
"Padharo Mahare Des" is a local phrase of Rajasthan that echoes the enthusiasm and compassion with which they welcome the tourists. It means Welcome To My Land.
2. One of the first well planned cities of India
Jaipur is named after the king Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, who founded the city in 1727. He hired a Bengali architect called Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, who designed the city, making it the first well-planned city of India.
The houses are defined by balconies, small windows, courtyards, and entrances. Areas were allocated according to professions; hence, generations of jewelers, stone carvers, miniature painters, and others are living in the same localities for over 290 years.
3. The purpose behind Hawa Mahal
Hawa Mahal ( Translation: The Wind Palace or The Palace of Breeze) was built in 1799 by King Sawai Pratap Singh, the grandson of King Sawai Jai Singh. The designer of this unique structure is Lal Chand Singh. The Mahal has five stories that collectively look like a beehive with its 953 small windows, which allow the fresh air to pass through, thus making the palace windy.
The purpose of building this palace was to provide royal ladies to observe daily life on the street and the festival processions without being seen by the citizens.
